Rick George
President & CEO
Suncor Energy Inc.

Rick George is president and chief executive officer of Suncor Energy Inc., Canada's pioneer oil sands company. Rick joined Suncor in 1991 and, under his leadership, Suncor became a publicly traded company and embarked on a multi-phased growth strategy that turned a once struggling enterprise into a leader in Canada's energy industry. From an initial public offering of approximately $1 billion in 1992, Suncor's market capitalization has grown to $45 billion today. Under Rick's leadership, the company continues to expand with plans for a $20 billion investment that targets doubling daily production in 2012.

Rick's view of technological innovation and sustainable development has influenced the growth of the oil sands industry, which has emerged from an "alternative" energy source with an uncertain future to become a significant energy supplier to the North American marketplace and a major force of economic growth in Canada.

Rick served as chairman of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives from 2003 to 2006 and remains on their board of directors as honorary chair. In 2006, he was selected by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to serve as a member of the North American Competitiveness Council. In 2007, Rick was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his leadership in the development of Canada's natural resources sector, his efforts to provide economic opportunities to Aboriginal communities and his commitment to sustainable development.

Rick holds a bachelor of science degree from Colorado State University, a law degree from the University of Houston Law School and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development.

He and his wife have three children. The entire family became Canadian citizens in 1996.
